Research Reactors (or Non-Power Reactors) are nuclear reactors that are not used for the production of electricity. These reactors have a wide variety of applications including basic research, production of radioisotopes for medical or industrial purposes, testing for nuclear power reactors, and education. Research reactors have a wide variety of characteristics, and are typically much smaller than nuclear power plants (NPPs), with power levels ranging from just a few watts (“Zero-power Reactors”) up to a few hundred MW (about 1/10th of a typical nuclear power reactor). Today, there are around 220 operational research reactors in the world, making up about 1/3rd of the total operating reactors in the world. This presentation will cover the history of these reactors,…
