About the event
Our Rockville Numberphiles is a math club for math enthusiasts from middle school to adult. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Our interactive discussions and presentations help mathematicians explore the broad range of mathematics, its history, and problem solving. For more information contact Howard at hjlichtman@lichtman.ws or 301.580.7190.
This month's topic: How many piano tuners are there in New York City? How much time do Americans spend untangling earbuds each year? Questions like these — often called "Fermi problems" after the physicist Enrico Fermi — are difficult, if not impossible, to answer precisely, but with some basic math and some (hopefully) reasonable assumptions, we can come up with approximate answers. Tonight, we will put our "guesstimation" skills to work and try to solve various Fermi problems.
