“Rigs to Reefs: Reimagining our Energy Past as an Eco-Friendly Future”
with Amber Sparks
Tuesday, July 16, 7:00 - 8:00 PM on Zoom
There comes a time when the useful life of an oil platform comes to an end, at least when it comes to drilling for oil, and that’s when we dive in. Amber Sparks is a marine scientist on a mission to re-purpose offshore oil and gas platforms as artificial reefs around the world. In her home state, California, there are 27 oil and gas platforms off the coast that have already become massive reefs and are among the most productive habitats globally. This lecture will shed light on how scientists, operators, and regulators are beginning to think creatively about the net benefits of Rigs to Reef decommissioning.
Speaker: Amber Sparks is a marine environmental scientist and oil and gas consultant. She has a B.A. in Marine Science from UC Berkeley and a M.A.S in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In 2018, Amber was recognized on Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the energy sector for her work with Blue Latitudes to develop sustainable, creative, and cost-effective solutions for the environmental issues that surround the offshore energy industry.
