About the event
Dr. Tom O’Haver will join us to explore the mathematical basis of sound and its mathematical description. Sounds of various types to be synthesized mathematically and electronically, forming the basis of the "synth" sound in popular music beginning in the 1960s. A powerful tool for sound analysis was originated by a French mathematician who lived in the time of Napoleon and who studied the seemingly unrelated phenomenon of heat transfer.
Numberphiles is a math club for adults and middle/high school students. Under age 14 must attend with an adult. Our interactive discussions and presentations help youth and adults explore the broad range of elementary and advanced mathematics, its history, and problem solving.
