Girls in grades 5-8 are invited to be part of a special workshop exploring the science of language
Time & Location
Mar 15, 2026, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Rockville Science Center, 36C Maryland Ave, Rockville, MD 20850, USA
About the event
Girls in grades 5-8 are invited to join us to explore the science of language! By using the scientific method and reflecting on their own language use, girls will find patterns in how people talk, learn how we use our body parts to produce speech, build a model of the larynx (voice box) to take home, and calculate the length of their vocal tract from a spectrogram! Girls will also learn about careers in language science career paths, including linguistics, marketing, speech-language pathology, and data science.
Instructor: Kathleen Oppenheimer is a speech-language pathologist and a language scientist. She has worked in a children's hospital, been a data scientist on two clinical trials, conducted research on language acquisition, and now runs a private practice in Bethesda, Maryland. Kathleen has been visiting K-12 classrooms to talk about the science of language for more than 10 years.
