About the event
Join us for a week of science at the Rockville Science Center.
August 12 - 16
Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Age: 8 - 12
Our morning program is Decoding Your DNA and the afternoon program is Robotics Challenge.
Campers enjoy lunch and free-time together from noon - 1:00 pm (bring a bagged lunch and drink).
The morning program explores the microscopic world of microorganisms and cell structure. Build a model animal cell and learn what makes an animal and plant cell different, and how cells divide to heal and make new organs. You will build your DNA and decode the not-so-secret DNA code and simulate protein folding through the Japanese art of origami. We will also Investigate the gas production in photosynthesis and yeast metabolism of sugar generating explosive foam: elephant's toothpaste. At the end, you will play a game to figure out your unique familial genetics and the challenge is to design a unique DNA sequence that expresses your chosen set of genes.
The afternoon robotics challenge includes the opportunity to:
- Build, program and operate a LEGO Mindstorms robot with different sensors
- Work through a series of exercises to experience solving elemental robotics tasks.
