Join us for our monthly program where you can meet with other Amateur Radio Operators to learn, exchange ideas, and socialize. Open to aspiring, new, and advanced radio operators. You do not need to be licensed or affiliated with any amateur radio club to attend the Hangout.
This month's program: "The hidden secrets of the coaxial cable and baluns." with Michael Katzmann, NV3Z
Radio amateurs are encouraged to use baluns with wire dipole antennas; however, the descriptions given for both the reason to use them and how they work are usually wrong. The coaxial cable seems simple but that simplicity hides some very clever tricks that are rarely revealed. A good understanding of how the radio signal gets from the transmitter to the antenna and how the feed line and antenna interact will help in making clear the purpose and benefits of the balun.
