At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Dr. Amy Elliott and her team are using 3D printing (additive manufacturing) to reinvent nuclear fuel called TRISO—tiny, spherical fuel particles protected by multiple layers of carbon and ceramic. These layers act like miniature “spacesuits” that keep radioactive material safely contained, even at extreme temperatures. Dr. Elliott’s research takes TRISO to the next level by using advanced 3D printing to arrange these particles in precise, engineered patterns. The result? Fuel that lasts longer, performs better, and could make nuclear power safer and more efficient than ever before. In this talk, Dr. Elliott will share how creativity, robotics, and materials science come together to build the energy systems of tomorrow—and why innovation in nuclear energy might be one of the coolest frontiers in science today.
