Rockville Science Cafe: What does a Zoo Keeper Do

Have you ever wondered what a zoo keeper does? Animal care in zoological facilities is a coordinated effort involving nutrition, welfare, statistics, and more. Keepers are a dedicated group of people that work with all taxa, using science and creativity every day. Come learn about conservation efforts in captivity, and the work behind the scenes to save species from extinction.

Hilary is an experienced Animal Keeper at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington DC. Hilary has worked in the animal care field across a wide diversity of taxa. She is dedicated to improving captive husbandry and education as well as passionate about improving the field from within using her background in Environmental Education, Conservation Issues, Animal Husbandry, Community Outreach, and Public Speaking.
