Photography Classes

 Instructor: Cat Simmons is a local Gaithersburg / Rockville photographer and instructor and holds a Master of Fine Arts in photography from Savannah College of Art and Design. She is part of The Silver Water Collective, a group of national and international women photographers united towards creating, collaborating, and inspiring other female photographers in their own pursuits of contemporary art.

Photography Basics I: $60

Introduction to camera functions and photography essentials. Participants will be introduced to basic camera settings, the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO) and standard compositional elements.
Learn what all those buttons on your camera control and how to use them to master control over your DSLR or mirrorless camera. You will leave this workshop with a foundation for taking charge of your camera and your photographs. This workshop includes both lecture and hands-on components. Participants will receive a detailed packet of notes for success at home.

This course provides participants with an opportunity to practice the essentials of photography through a guided, hands-on approach to learning. It is open to anyone who wants a refresher on their camera skills or photography techniques. Participants will use their own cameras as they are led through a series of exercises intended to target the use of shooting in Manual Mode while considering the many other technical aspects of both the camera and photograph. Unlike the Photography Basics I workshop, this course does not have a lecture component.

 

No prerequisite is required, but participants should have had some previous introduction to their camera functions and/or photo basics.

Photography Editing Workshop: $45

Saturday, April 29, 4:30 - 6:30 pm

This editing workshop is designed to introduce participants to a few of the tools available for editing and photo enhancement. The instructor will introduce basic editing techniques across three applications: Adobe Lightroom Classic + Camera Raw* and Snapseed** (mobile app). Adobe offers a free 30-day trial.
*Note: Adobe Lightroom Classic requires a subscription ($9.99/month)

**Snapseed is a free mobile phone application, IOS and Android


This is an introductory course intended to serve as an overview of your options and to equip you enough to begin to enhance your own images with ease. Taking a photograph will get you halfway to a solid photograph. Editing your digital images is a necessary step in creating excellent photographs.


Participants should have Adobe Lightroom Classic downloaded on their laptops prior to class. (Make sure you choose the Classic version!) They should also have Snapseed downloaded on their mobile device.

Photo Release

By registering for a class or other event, I consent to Rockville Science Center's use of myself and/or my child’s image and likeness as shown in any photographs, videotapes, motion picture film, or electronic images and any audio recordings made of the participant’s voice in whatever way Rockville Science Center desires, including television, print, website, and social media platforms. Furthermore, I consent that such photographs, films, recordings, electronic images shall be the sole property of  Rockville Science Center.

RSC's Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel a registration, please email us at info@rockvillesciencecenter.org as soon as possible. Cancellations received:

At least 7 days prior to the first class: 100% of the ticket price (minus the fee) will be refunded. 
Less than 7 days prior to the first class: 50% of the ticket price (minus the fee) will be refunded.
Low Enrollment: In the event that the Rockville Science Center cancels a class due to low enrollment, 100% of the ticket price including fees will be promptly refunded.
