Science Cafe

Science Café: third Tuesday of every month.

Science Cafés are live events in casual settings, such as a pubs, coffeehouses or restaurants, are open to everyone, featuring a scientist engaging and leading the discussion to encourage conversation, debate, and interaction. Successful cafés create an atmosphere that reaches out to everyone, and typically reaches out to people who don’t typically get involved in scientific discussions.

The Rockville Science Café is in collaboration with the Rockville Consortium for Science and SigmaXi, who are sponsors of the Science Café series for our community to explore the latest ideas in science and technology outside of a traditional academic context.

The RCS will use the popularity of robotics to develop interests in engineering and science in early teens, before they get to high school. Small teams of teens will build, program, and prepare robots for a competition on the last day of the activity. These students could potentially participate in local and national robotics competitions during the 2012/2013 school year.

  • 8th/9th graders will have a summer activity that stimulates their interest in science and engineering.
  • High school students will have a leadership opportunity in an area of their potential career.
  • Rockville City will have a showcase event that excites the families and citizens, and more fully utilize their facilities.
  • Local schools can develop teams interested in robotic competitions.
  • Extend the MCPS Science and Engineering Curriculum beyond the classroom.
  • Program could be expanded during the school year and outside Rockville.
  • Rockville Science Center will gain exposure and be seen as a viable entity.

The Rockville Science Center will use the abundance of science-rich venues and attractions in the greater DC-Baltimore area — to attract adults who want to share the experience of science in a new and different way by discovering place “off the beaten track.”

Explorations will be a one-day event from, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., within driving distance of Rockville.

Explorations will initially be scheduled quarterly starting in April with the expectation that they will evolve into every other month or monthly events.

The Rockville Science Center is working to bring interested adults the unique and personal experience of “access to the inaccessible!”

  1. Up to 40 science-engaged adults from the Rockville/Montgomery County area will have unique experiences with local science organizations.
  1. RSC board/volunteers will escort the groups and thus become themselves much more familiar with the regional science asset base.
  1. This prototype initiative may be expandable to other audiences.
  1. The Rockville Science Center will gain greater exposure to both attendees and the establishments scheduled and are seen as a valuable friend to the community.
