(new day)

Wednesday, February 17,, 2010, 7:00 PM "Global Warming: Science and Impacts," Dr. Brenda Ekwurzel, Federal Climate Scientist

The focus on "Global Warming: Latest science on impacts for our region" will be on how the impacts of global warming affects where we live, work, and play.

Come out and find out how to respond to common myths and misconceptions about climate change. Dr. Ekwurzel has experienced first hand the accusations of people and organizations spreading and repeating disinformation about global warming. Even more disturbing, the latest trends over the past couple of months is to attack the scientists who have spent their careers trying to understand our natural climate and our role in modifying it.

Dr. Ekwurzel asserts, "The science community must do a better job of preparing ourselves for the false accusations with cogent answers, and then inform our neighbors, families and friends about the overwhelming evidence of the measurable causes and the consequences of Global Warming that depends o the emissions choices we make."

Location: Branded 72 Pit Barbecue (formerly O'Brien's) 387 E. Gude Drive, Rockville, MD

About Dr. Brenda Ekwurzel

Brenda Ekwurzel works on the national climate program at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). She is leading UCS's climate science education work aimed at strengthening support for strong federal climate legislation and sound U.S. climate policies.

Prior to joining UCS, Dr. Ekwurzel was on the faculty of the University of Arizona Department of Hydrology and Water Resources with a joint appointment in the Geosciences Department. Her specialty is isotope geochemistry, a tool she has used to study climate variability in places as disparate as the Arctic Ocean and the desert Southwest. She has published on topics that include climate variability and fire, isotopic dating of groundwater, Arctic Ocean tracer oceanography, paleohydrology, and coastal sediment erosion. She has also worked as a hydrologist with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, working with communities to protect groundwater sources.

Dr. Ekwurzel completed her doctorate work at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and post-doctoral research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
